Big increase in demand for construction workers in 2023

The resurgence of construction here meant professional roles in that sector recorded the biggest increase in demand this year, new data shows.

IrishJobs TalentBank, a database containing over 1.2m job candidates, shows demand for site engineers rose by 255%, while demand for site managers more than doubled to 157% between the third quarter of last year and this year.

Quantity surveyors were also heavily sought after.

“Data reveals an exceptional increase in demand for skilled professionals in the construction sector over the past year,” said Sam Dooley, Country Director of The Stepstone Group Ireland with responsibility for IrishJobs.

“With warnings from the Fiscal Advisory Council earlier this year regarding skills shortages in the construction sector, there is a clear need for upskilling and reskilling in the sector to meet high levels of demand.”

“Ambitious national housing and climate targets means that the high demand for skills in the sector is unlikely to abate in the medium term.”

But healthcare professionals were also in demand, with searches for nurses up 94%.

Demand for financial accountants climbed by 67% while searches for engineers were up 21%.

When it came to job postings, Lead Data Architect saw the biggest rise, as skills in the area of data management became highly sought after.

Senior Medical Scientist was the most in-demand job for the year in the science and pharma sector, QC Analyst in the manufacturing sector and Financial Services Manager in banking.

“Despite slowing economic growth, the jobs market in Ireland remains robust, with a record number of people in employment according to recent figures from the CSO,” said Mr Dooley.

“As the tight labour market persists, competition among firms in attracting and retaining talent remains fierce.”
